As a new parent, you’ve probably heard the term “tummy time” tossed around in parenting circles, pediatrician visits, or even in those late-night google searches. But what exactly is tummy time, and why is it such a big deal? If you’re picturing your little one lying on their belly, kicking their tiny legs, and maybe even letting out a few adorable grunts, you’re on the right track. But there’s so much more to it than meets the eye.

Tummy time is more than just a cute moment to capture for your Instagram feed—it’s a critical part of your baby’s physical and cognitive development. From strengthening those tiny neck and shoulder muscles to preventing flat spots on the head, the benefits are as vast as they are vital. With a little patience, creativity, and the right approach, tummy time can become a cherished part of your daily routine.

In this blog, we’ll dive into the why, how, and when of tummy time. Whether you’re a first-time parent or a seasoned pro looking for fresh ideas, this guide will help you make the most of this essential activity.

Why is it important

Tummy time occurs when your baby lies on their stomach, supporting their weight on their forearms.  This activity is vital as it strengthens their head, neck, and upper body.  To ensure proper development, your baby should practice tummy time daily.  Ideally, start soon after birth, beginning with 1-2 minutes in the first few weeks.  Gradually, increase to 10-15 minutes several times a day as they grow stronger.  Remember, “back to sleep, tummy to play” is a good rule to follow.  While sleeping on their backs, babies may develop flat spots on their heads due to prolonged positioning. Thankfully, tummy time helps prevent this by encouraging movement and reducing pressure on one spot.  Always supervise your baby during tummy time to keep them safe and engaged.

How Tummy Time Helps Baby’s Development

  • Motor Skill Development: Tummy time plays a key role in helping your baby develop essential motor skills. As they practice lifting their head and pushing up, these movements lay the foundation for important milestones like rolling over, crawling, and eventually walking. Over time, these skills become more refined, supporting their overall physical development.
  • Muscle Strength: Spending time on their tummy helps babies build strength in their neck, shoulders, and arms. These muscles are crucial for fighting gravity, lifting their heads, and developing upper body strength. With consistent practice, they gradually gain more control and endurance.

  • Skull Shape: Tummy time reduces the risk of flat spots on the back of the head, a condition known as positional plagiocephaly. By encouraging time off their back, it helps maintain a more rounded head shape and prevents issues caused by prolonged time in one position.
  • Sensory Development: This activity allows babies to explore their surroundings from a new perspective. As they interact with different textures and surfaces, it enhances their sensory experiences and encourages curiosity about the world around them.
  • Bonding Opportunity: Tummy time provides a wonderful chance for parents to bond with their baby. By making the sessions fun and engaging, through smiles, toys, or gentle encouragement, it strengthens emotional connections and builds trust.
  • Hand-Eye Coordination: During tummy time, babies often reach for toys or look around, which helps improve their hand-eye coordination. These actions also enhance their visual tracking skills, preparing them for more complex tasks as they grow.
  • Overall Benefits: The numerous advantages of tummy time make it a vital part of your baby’s daily routine. When prioritized consistently, it supports muscle growth, movement control, and overall strength. Over time, you’ll notice your baby becoming more confident and capable in their physical abilities.

How Do I Do Tummy Time?

Newborns: Begin tummy time by placing your baby belly-down on your chest or lap. Do this for a few minutes, 2-3 times daily. During this, they practice lifting their heads and strengthening their neck and shoulder muscles. Over time, gradually increase the duration.

Older Babies: Use a blanket in a clear area and place your baby on their stomach. Start with 3-5 minutes, several times a day. At first, they may get fussy, so keep sessions short. Then, slowly make them longer. For best results, do tummy time when they’re fed, changed, and happy.

Progression: As your baby grows, increase tummy time frequency and length. By 3 months, aim for about 1 hour daily.

Engagement: To keep them interested, make noises, shake a rattle, or place a toy nearby. This encourages them to look up, push up, and reach forward.

Importance: Remember, tummy time prevents flat spots and builds strength. Always watch your baby to ensure safety.

How to make tummy time engaging, enjoyable, and safe?

To make tummy time more enjoyable and comforting for your baby, engage with them by talking, singing, or gently stroking their back. You can also tickle their hands to keep them entertained and reassured of your presence. If your baby seems uncomfortable lying on the floor, try alternative positions, such as placing them on a rolled-up towel, your lap, or even your chest, as these can provide additional support and comfort. Always remember to supervise your baby closely during tummy time to ensure their safety. As your baby grows stronger and begins to move more, it’s important to clear away any dangerous objects from their surroundings to prevent accidents and create a safe environment for their exploration.

What can I do if my baby dislikes tummy time?

Tummy time is crucial for your baby’s development, but not all babies enjoy it. If your little one fusses or cries, try these simple tips to make it easier and more fun:

  • Start Small: Begin with 1-2 minutes and gradually increase as your baby gets comfortable.
  • Get Down on Their Level: Lie face-to-face with your baby, make eye contact, and talk or sing to keep them engaged.
  • Use Toys and Props: Place colorful toys or a mirror nearby to encourage them to lift their head. A rolled-up towel under their chest can provide extra support.
  • Try Different Surfaces: Experiment with tummy time on your chest, a play mat, or even an exercise ball (with proper support).
  • Incorporate Movement: Gently rock or sway your baby while they’re on their tummy to make it more enjoyable.
  • Tummy-to-Tummy—Recline with your baby resting on your chest, helping them feel safer and more comfortable.

With patience, most babies gradually get used to tummy time and tolerate it better.

Takeway

Tummy time is a powerhouse for your baby’s development—building muscle strength, boosting motor skills, and preventing flat head syndrome. But remember, while tummy time is essential during awake hours, babies should always sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Back sleeping is safer, allowing for easier breathing and lowering the chances of suffocation.

So, keep tummy time playful and supervised, and save the back position for sleep.
